How Air Conditioner Works

An air conditioner provides us with a comfortable environment to be in. A lot of work happens inside to machine in order for that process to happen. Air conditioners use chemicals that easily convert from a gas to a liquid and back again. This chemical is then used to transfer heat from the air inside of the house to the outside. The machine in general has four main parts. It contains a condenser, an evaporator, a metering device, and a compressor. The compressor and condensers are usually located at the outer portion of the air conditioner. The evaporator is usually located in the inside of the house and can also sometimes be part of a furnace.


The chemical arrives at the compressor as a cool, low pressure gas. The compressor pumps the chemical. This packs the molecules of the chemical closer together. The closer the molecules are together, the higher its energy and its temperature. Afterwards, the chemical leaves the compressor as a hot, high pressure gas and then flows into the condenser. The condenser is a part of the unit that is usually with a lot of metal “fins” which help the heat go away more quickly.


When the chemical leaves the condenser, its temperature is much cooler and it changes from a gas to a liquid under high pressure. The chemical later goes into the evaporator usually a tiny narrow hole. On the opposite side, the chemical’s pressure drops. When that happens, it begins to turn into gas. As the chemical changes to gas and evaporates, it extracts heat from the air around it. The heat in the air is needed to separate the molecules of the chemical from a liquid to gas.

So many times, when we receive phone calls for service, the first question we ask is “what type of HVAC unit do you have?”


75 times out of 100 the person on the other end has no idea what type of air conditioning unit they have. In this section we will be discussing a bunch of different types of air conditioning units. Hopefully this will educate the reader in understanding the difference between most air conditioning units. Most air conditioning units we deal with here in California are of the following: Split Systems, PTAC units, Packaged Units, Mini Splits, and of course the basic Window Air Conditioning unit.

Glossary

AFUE

Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency is a measure of your furnaces heating efficiency. The higher the AFUE percentage, the more efficient the furnace. The minimum percentage established by the DOE for furnaces is 78%.

Grid-tied

A grid-tied system is the most common and least expensive of all residential solar systems. It allows you to use your own solar generated electricity to save energy and reduce costs. At times when the solar system isn’t producing electricity, such as at night, electricity is provided by the utility company’s grid, or network of power stations.

Heat Pump

A heat pump is an HVAC unit that heats or cools by moving heat. During the winter, a heat pump draws heat from outdoor air and circulates it through your homes air ducts. In the summer, it reverses the process and removes heat from your house and releases it outdoors.

When an air handler or furnace is positioned on its side and circulates air in one end and out the other. Ideal for attic or crawl space installations.

HSPF

The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is the heating efficiency rating for heat pumps. The higher the rating, the more efficient the heat pump. HSPF will be regulated in 2006 at 7.7.
