How Heat Pump Water Heaters Work
A heat pump water heater, also called a "hybrid" water heater, doesn’t burn fuel to generate heat. Instead, it evaporates refrigerant to siphon thermal energy from the air around the unit. The evaporator coil, usually located in the top of the tank, absorbs heat using refrigerant gas and sends it down to the condenser coil inside the tank. The condenser coil then condenses the refrigerant back into liquid, releasing the heat into the water in the tank. This is more or less the same method that heat pumps use to warm a home, hence the term "heat pump water heater." Read on for some of the advantages of heat pump water heaters.
The Advantages of Heat Pump Water Heaters
The main advantage to heat pump water heaters is that they don’t have to burn fuel to create heat. Compared to more traditional combustion–based water heaters, that’s a significant cost savings. It is important to note that heat pump water heaters have some more specific requirements to operate properly. The unit needs to be installed in a room of the correct size and temperature range in order to be as effective as possible. Even so, however, these are not tough requirements to meet, and the savings on an annual basis are well worth it.
